Con Dao Island district has received approval from provincial authorities to embark on a circular economy initiative in tourism, announced Trinh Hang, Director of the provincial Department of Tourism, during a recent conference. The project aims to harness tourism potential while addressing environmental challenges, striving for sustainable balance between the island’s ecosystem and economy.
As part of the initiative, Con Dao plans to develop and promote specialized travel products for luxury tourists, culture aficionados, and nature enthusiasts. Adventure tours within Con Dao National Park are also encouraged to unlock further tourism opportunities, according to officials.
Chu Hong Minh, Vice-President of the Con Dao Tourism Association, highlighted the adoption of digital technology to enhance cultural, spiritual, historical, and eco-tourism experiences. Popular activities include exploring the island’s natural beauty, witnessing sea turtles nesting and release rituals, diving, and admiring coral reefs.
Local engagement in community-based tourism allows visitors to immerse in daily island life, appreciated for its tranquility and pristine environment. Stakeholders emphasize the importance of sustainable tourism practices, advocating for infrastructure investments to preserve Con Dao’s natural charm amid rising visitor numbers.
Looking forward, Director Hang emphasized the need for net-zero emissions awareness among all stakeholders, foreseeing a future of sustainable tourism with minimal carbon footprint on Con Dao Island. In the first half of 2024, Con Dao welcomed over 396,000 visitors, generating approximately VND1.5 trillion (US$58.9 million) in tourism revenue, marking significant growth compared to the previous year.
